Dancing With Frank

I didn’t know how or why or any of the intricacies of how I ended up growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada in my teenage years. I didn’t ask questions and didn’t even want to know. I wanted to be there and was super excited to be plopped down in the middle of a happin’ place. WOW! What more could a girl of sixteen coming off a small rundown dairy farm in Missouri want in her most formative years. It was Vegas after all. There were only 4 high schools, and one was private. Can you imagine? Now, there is something like 96 high schools. And the strip had hotels with names like the Sahara, the Dunes, the Desert Inn, and the Sands. And Fremont ...

Blushing On Reba McEntire

It was the spring of 1990 and I was proudly wearing a mullet while sitting my skin-tight, Levi 501 clad ass on a hard, concrete step. I was just about to wrap up my freshman year of college and was working as a stagehand for a Reba McEntire concert. 30 minutes before I had ended 3 hours of hard, manual labor helping unload seven trucks worth of Reba concert gear. I was happy to be sitting, not so happy to be sitting on a hard, concrete step, and flat pissed that I had drawn this job during the concert. I had dreamed of running stage lights or waiting like a panther ready to strike at the sides of the stage for anything the band or ...

Buck Cherried

Roughly three years ago I was sitting in the Delta Sky Lounge in the Narita International Airport just outside of Tokyo, Japan sipping on a free, ice-cold beer. It only 10 a.m., but after flying all night from Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and staring a 9 ½ hour flight to Seattle in the eye, a few free, cold beers were really hitting the spot. The lounge was filled mainly with business travelers and a few families. I was well into my third, free beer and listening to Crazy Bitch by Buck Cherry with my headphones on to protect the innocents from the vulgar lyrics. Around the corner across the room walked five guys all tatted up wearing rocker type clothing. Their clothing was designed ...

This Bell(e) Didn’t Need Saving

Since this is not a tell-all about anyone other than about myself, I won’t bore you with the tales of the famous people I’ve met and have danced for over the years. But I will tell you about one of my most disappointing and my most surprisingly fun encounters. Both took place at the Mitchell Brothers O’Farrell Theatre. Mitchell Brothers is on the corner of Polk and O’Farrell in San Francisco. There are huge murals on the outside walls. One depicts a rainforest while the other has an underwater scene featuring life-size whales and dolphins. When I was a kid, I remember thinking the building was a zoo or an aquarium and that Tommy’s Joynt–a city landmark that had murals depicting busty saloon girls in ...

CASHING IT IN ON HOLMBY STREET

One calm nice night, I went to see a movie. I was innocently sitting there, eating my neighbor’s popcorn, watching the 2005 movie, “I WALK THE LINE” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and about the early part of Johnny Cash’s life. A little known scene flashed on the big movie screen, and I thought I was going to faint. I know my heart stopped, and my tiny hairs stood up on the back of my neck. I lost all color in my face, and the feeling went out of my limbs. All I could think of was the next shot would be a close up of my childhood house. The scene was about midway through the movie. By that time in life and the ...
