Tips From A Portrait Photographer

We all can learn something from portrait photographers to make our selfies and even group photos more appealing. The main ingredient to a good portrait photo is just a dash of imagination. What we want to avoid like the plague is the standard standing facing straight ahead type of shot. This is most unattractive way to photograph anyone including a supermodel. How Do We Be Creative With Standing Portraits? Instead of shooting your subject facing directly at the camera ask your subject to twist slightly in either direction. Twist at the waist or move your feet, but face the camera at an angle rather than straight on. Instead of the standard straight leg look have your subject bend their knee or place one leg over ...

On A Budget? Buy Used Photography Gear

If you are on a budget like I am, every dollar spent on photography gear has to count. Photography gear is damn expensive, no way around it! When I first started looking at camera bodies and lenses I noticed that stores like Adorama and B&H Photo, not endorsed by either, offered new and used equipment. At first I was damn cautious of used equipment. I didn’t want to buy someone else’s junk or problem equipment. However, when all the pennies were counted, and the stack was small, the only way I could afford a decent camera body and lens was to buy used. When I received my first used body and lens in the mail, I opened the box with apprehension. I was thinking the ...

Get Closer For Better Photos

I look at a lot of photos via social media and magazines everyday. One major problem with photographs I see over and over is the splotch of distraction that doesn’t go with the subject. For example if the subject is a beautiful, yellow flower that takes up 3/4 of the photograph, the splotch of distraction would be a crap brown, out of focus, god only knows what the hell it is taking up 1/4 of the photograph. My eyes don’t even look at the beautiful, yellow flower. They immediately go to the crap brown, splotch of distraction. How does a photographer get rid of the crap brown splotch of distraction? Take two steps closer to the subject. If that doesn’t work, take two steps closer ...

Click And Run Photography Adventures

What Is Click And Run Photography Click and run photography, at least to me, is when you go out via any mode of transportation with a camera and photograph anything and everything you happen to come across. This is my favorite type of photography, because you never know what you will see to shoot. Required Equipment For Click And Run Photography I always keep a backpack stocked and ready to go with impromptu gear that hopefully will cover any shooting situation I get myself into at any time. I will generally store the backpack in my car for quick, anytime access. Backpack The backpack must be comfortable enough to hike several miles and have enough storage space for all your gear. I like lots of ...

Why Knee Pads Are The Photographer’s Best Friend

When I am on the hunt for a cool shot I am always thinking about how I can present a look that hasn’t been captured one trillion times! Generally speaking any standing view is what we are used to seeing. For example, how many bloody looking down at a flower shots have you seen? Looking down at flowers is how we normally view them. So if I am going to make a flower shot interesting I have to get creative and present a new perspective. Getting low provides such a perspective. We normally don’t look at flowers from below. So to get below a flower we have to get on our knees. Trust me the ground under a flower is not going to me marshmallowy ...

6 Reasons Why Photography Is As Much Fun As A Person Can Have With Their Pants On!

After last week’s whiney blog about how much photography sucks donkey balls, I need to explain why I go through all those horrors and play the photography game! First off photography forces me to explore new places! I love getting in the car, on mass transit, or in an airplane for a destination I have found on a map that I have never explored! The photo below was taken at The Singapore Botanical Garden. Before I became a photographer, a botanical garden would not be on my list of places to visit. As a photographer, a botanical garden offers an endless variety of beautiful things to click! Photography offers a hobby/career that a person will never master. Well at least I never will, but I am ...

6 Reasons Photography Sucks Donkey Balls!

Lets be honest. There are some really sucky things about photography! First off photography is silly expensive. A person has to be Oprah rich to get some shots. For example those massive, howitzer cannon lenses you see on the sidelines of NFL football games can cost $20,000. This photograph below is captured with middle of the road equipment and even at that I invested about $3,000 to get the shot! Which leads to my second gripe! To get the photo above I had to get up before sunrise and be in position as the sun was poking over the Sapphire Mountains of Montana. The reason for this is because some sick bugger decided that one of the best times for lighting would be in the ...
